Approximate Utility Under Perceptual Restrictions

چکیده

If agents have perceptual limits, and cannot distinguish objects that are sufficiently similar, then immediate problems arise with this notion of rationality. For example, Mas-Colell, Whinston, and Green (1995) provide an example of an agent with limited visual perception, who cannot distinguish a white object from a gray one. Because preferences are assumed to be complete, and because the two objects look the same to the agent, the natural assumption is that the agent must be indifferent between the two alternatives. If the gray object in turn is compared to an otherwise identical black object, the agent may again be incapable of distinguishing the two alternatives. If indifference is transitive, this means that the agent must be indifferent between the black and the white objects, even if the two do not look alike to the agent. That is, complete and transitive preferences make agents with perceptual limits indifferent to everything.1

Overcoming Communication Restrictions in Collectives

Many large distributed system are characterized by having a large number of components (eg., agents, neurons) whose actions and interactions determine a %orld utility” which rates the performance of the overall system. Such “collectives” are often subject to communication restrictions, making it difiicult for components which tzy to optimize their own “private” utilities, to take actions that a...

Hybrid Influence Diagrams Using Mixtures of Truncated Exponentials

Mixtures of truncated exponentials (MTE) potentials are an alternative to discretization for representing continuous chance variables in influence diagrams. Also, MTE potentials can be used to approximate utility functions. This paper introduces MTE influence diagrams, which can represent decision problems without restrictions on the relationships between continuous and discrete chance variable...

Restrictions: Help in Documenting Client Code Under a Verified Software Paradigm

A novel programming language construct, restrictions, provides a mechanism to document abstract invariants of program variables and also may simplify program correctness proofs of the use of components. Examples illustrating the use and utility of restrictions are presented.
